4 Styling Techniques That Can Damage Your Hair

hairStyling your hair is one way of expressing yourself. Fixing up your hair neatly and beautifully can boost your confidence, that’s why you will often wake up early in the morning just to style your hair.

Unfortunately some styling techniques can harm your hair especially when done frequently. Problems like dull and dry hair, making hair prone to breakage, affecting hair growth. In worst cases, hair loss can also occur. Below are some of the techniques that can damage your hair.

  1. Minimize the use of heat. Heat based products like: hair curlers, hair driers and especially hair straighteners can reach temperatures so high, they can literally vaporize the little moisture the hair holds.  This can make hair dull and very dry, making hair brittle.  Though the use of heat is the easiest way to style hair, constant use can damage hair, so it is advisable to use heat styling on specially occasions.
  2. Gentle grooming. Sometimes we find ourselves forcefully pulling our brush or comb thru our hair. This can put a lot of strain to the hair and can break the strands. In some cases, hair can be pulled out from the scalp which can cause patches of bald spots on the scalp. The best solution for this is use wide tooth combs or better: use special brush or combs that help reduce tangles.
  3. Do not brush or comb hair while it’s wet. Some of us commonly do this; again this can pull hair from the roots and can cause hair breakage. It is best to wrap hair and towel dry, then air dry before grooming.
  4. Some hair styles like braids, cornrows, and ponytails can put a lot of strain to hair especially when these hair styles are worn tightly. Again hair is prone to breakage and being pulled from roots. If possible try not to style hair in this fashion, or you can style hair loosely to prevent strain to hair.

Hair Growth: Simple Summer Hair Care Tips

hair growthSummer brings long hot and humid days that could cause dull frizzy and dry hair. During this time our hair is susceptible to breakage, tangles, damage and split ends.  This is the reason why some folks experience difficulty trying to get their hair long during the summer months.

To get your hair growing back healthy again, you need to learn how to properly condition your hair. The primary goal is to lock the moisture within the hairs core to prevent hair from getting dry. Also, providing nutrients to the hair and scalp can help promote hair growth.

To promote healthy growing hair you will need to consume healthy amounts of protein daily. Our hair is mostly made of a protein called keratin, the same protein found in our skin and nails. That’s why when your hair grows healthy and beautiful, so does your skin and nails. Rich sources of protein are: soya beans, lentils, dairy products like milk and cheese, fish and lean meat from beef, pork or chicken.
Also, it is also good to put use of the so called “hair vitamins” which are: panthotenic acid and biotin.

Panthotenic acid or vitamin B5 or more popularly known in the hair industry is provitamin B5 helps make hair really soft, slippery and shinny. This is everything that you’ve want for your hair, right? But having really soft and slippery hair also help prevent hair tangles; thus, preventing hair breakage. That’s why provitamin b5 is a common ingredient among shampoos and conditioners.

Biotin or vitamin B7 helps make each hair strand stronger, also preventing hair breakage.

It is important to mention that both vitamins need to applied directly to the scalp and hair. A lot of people are misguided and take mega-doses of these vitamins for hair growth. This is erroneous and could lead to vitamin toxicity.

Hair Health for Fast Hair Growth

hair growthHaving beautiful long hair is every woman’s dream. Though short hair can easily be managed and can also look dazzling. Still, nothing compares to the elegance of long, thick and shiny hair. No wonder the hair extension business is doing well.

Sadly, a lot of women have difficulty growing their hair long. Slow hair growth, breakage, dull dry hair are some of the common problems you will encounter and have to surpass to get your hair growing longer.  Proper hair care is the key to healthy and fast growing hair which will be discussed below:

Pack In The Nutrients

Having a healthy Diet and taking your vitamins and minerals daily is an essential part of hair growth. Our hair is mostly made of a protein called keratin, the same protein found in our skin and nails. So it is important to consume the right amounts of protein every day. Good sources of protein are dairy products, milk, fish, soy beans, lentils and lean meats from beef, pork and chicken.

Vitamins are nutrients the body needs to function properly. Vitamins are co-enzymes that help the body metabolize food efficiently. There are also vitamins that can help strengthen and beautify hair when directly applied to the scalp and hair like biotin and pantothenic acid.

Biotin or Vitamin B7 is part of the water soluble B-complex vitamins. When applied directly to hair and scalp, biotin help strengthen each strand. Pantothenic acid or popularly known as provitamin B5 in the hair industry, beautifies hair by making it shiny, soft and slippery. Both vitamins help reduce hair breakage.

Keeping It Clean

Daily washing is very important in keeping the hair and scalp clean. Our hair is like a sponge when it comes to dust or dirt flying around in the air. Also, we produce a natural oil called sebum, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands found on every hair follicle. This sebum functions as a natural hair and skin conditioner, but when this oil is mixed with dust and dirt, it could dry up and clog the pores and could even cause dandruff. So it is essential to remove all the dirt and excess oils to make the scalp an ideal environment for hair growth.
