This information has led non-pregnant women and even men to take this type of vitamin in hoping to get fast and healthier hair growth. But the truth is, there have been no studies to prove that prenatal vitamins does or can promote hair growth.

The reason behind the belief that prenatal vitamins promote hair growth is because pregnant women have really thick and beautiful hair. Mothers will swear that the condition of their hair is at its best when they were pregnant. But the real reason why they have great looking hair is due to their hormones. Hormones like estrogen are at its peak during pregnancy. Estrogen is responsible for delaying or stopping the telogen phase of the hair growth cycle, which is the stage of active hair fall. In addition, estrogen prolongs the anagen phase, which is the stage of active hair growth. This is also the reason why some women experience excessive body hair or hirsutism during pregnancy.

Prenatal vitamins are not made to replace your regular multivitamins. Although, prenatal vitamins are readily available and can easily bought over the counter, some of the dosage of some vitamins are higher to suit the needs of a child bearing mother. Folic acid dosage is increased because this B vitamin help it prevent congenital malformations, brain and spinal cord defects in the child. Also, folic acid aids the body to produce new cells. Iron is also increased as it is needed by the expectant mother in preparation for blood loss in childbirth. Too much iron can cause stomach upset, irritation to the bowel and worst, can cause ulcerations to the lining of the stomach.

Prenatal vitamins are not recommended for hair growth, in fact, they are dangerous if taken like your regular multivitamins. If you want your hair to grow fast, better stick with a natural hair growth stimulants like FAST shampoo and conditioner.

 

Foods That Are Bad For Hair Growth

While true mercury poisoning is rare, some individuals who consume a lot of fish, especially raw fish from sushi and sashimi can get significant amounts of mercury that can lead to hair thinning and eventually hair loss.

Too Much Sugar

Eating too much sweets can be bad for your hair. When we eat sugar rich foods our blood sugar spikes, our body responds by secreting insulin to decrease blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, the sugar surge also raises the levels of androgen, a male hormone that can make the hair follicles weak in both women and men.

Too Little Protein

Since our hair is practically made of protein, people who don’t get much protein experience thin, dry and brittle hair. Vegetarians should know that protein doesn’t only come from meat, there are a lot of vegetables that are excellent sources of proteins too like: soya beans, lentil and spinach.
